Founded in 1991, Northern Edge processes only certified organic flaxseed that is grown north of the 53rd parallel, cleaned to a standard of 99.9% food pure for human consumption.  Whole Milled Flax Seed grown north of the 53rd parallel  is the highest quality in the world and contains 38-44% oil and up to 60% of this oil is Linolenic Acid (Omega 3), which is an essential Fatty Acid. An ideal solution to aid the body in oxygen absorption among other health benefits.

Northern Edge uses a special "cold mill" (millhead temperatures under 42 Celsius) process to enhance digestibility and bioavailability, using a patented flaking process that breaks up the seed, yet leaves the oil within the seed.  This flaxseed is milled, not ground or crushed, in order to leave as much of the oil as possible within the cell walls (not exposed to oxygen).

Northern Edge Flaxseed combines the benefits obtained from consuming flaxseed oil, fiber products, lignan and mucilage (soluble fiber), and high quality protein all in one complete wholesome product. This flax can be eaten raw, blended into drinks, sprinkled on ice cream or cooked and baked into items without losing it's nutritional value. Use in all your favorite recipes.   Try it along with Raw Cacao!

Be wary: whole unmilled flaxseed is NOT digestible by humans.  It only acts as a laxative.  (In fact it moves so efficiently that after it passes through the digestive tract it can be planted and it will grow.) It needs to be milled to allow the digestive tract to absorb the nutrients contained in the seed.  However, bulk milled flaxseed may rapidly go rancid by exposing the essential fatty acids to light and air, resulting in a poor shelf-life.

Donald O. Rudin, M.D., a medical researcher, contends that the level of Linolenic acid in the American diet has been reduced 80% in the last 100 years. Dr. Rudin found that Omega 3 Fatty Acids deficiency is the basic cause of major mental illness today.

Flax is the best known source for the two most essential acids: Linoleic (LA, (18:2) and Linolenic (LNA. (18:3) foes of heart attacks, breast and colon cancer, arthritis, severe menstrual cramps - even depression.

The Omega-3 and Omega-6 oils are two essential fatty acids that together:
bulletform the membranes of every one of the billions of cells in your body
bulletcontrol the way cholesterol works in our system
bulletare the only fats that become prostaglandins, which play a key role in regulating the cardiovascular, immune, digestive and reproductive functions; inflammation and healing; functioning of the brain; and calorie burning.

All amino acids essential to the human health are found in Flaxseed. The essential amino acids cannot be made by the human body must be provided through the diet.

The body cannot manufacture the essential Fatty Acids, Linoleic (Omega 6) or Linolenic (Omega 3) from other elements. They must be supplied daily in the diet. In the typical North American diet we consume too much Omega 6 and not enough Omega 3.

The Northern Edge Difference
bulletNorthern Edge "cold milled" flaxseed is digestible and biologically available because of the special slicing action, that does not crush or grind the seed, one package at a time.
bulletNorthern Edge "cold milled" flaxseed is milled directly into the unique, light proof, reusable stand pack and immediately vacuum packed.
bulletNorthern Edge "cold milled" flaxseed is actually whole milled flaxseed and not the flax meal left over from Linseed oil production.
bulletNorthern Edge "cold milled" flaxseed has a consistent green, fresh, nutty flavor unlike the acrid, burning aftertaste of rancid flax.

One package of Northern Edge Whole Milled flaxseed contains:

bullet45% flax oil of which approximately
bullet60 % is Omega 3 (Alpha Linolenic Acid)
bullet22% Protein (includes all 9 essential Amino Acids) 94 grams
bullet14% Soluble Fiber (Mucilage) 118 grams
bullet12% Insoluble Fiber
bullet5% Moisture
bullet2% Organic absorbable minerals (18 grams) including: Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Iron, Copper, Zinc, Manganese, Selenium, & Boron
bulletVitamins A1, B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, & E
bulletPlus....100 times more Lignans  (over 350 mgs) than the next best source

A tablespoon of Northern Edge Milled Flaxseed also contains up to 3800mg of ALNA, the primary Omega 3. This is 10 times as much as most fish oil capsules without the drawbacks, like the rancid taste, chemical residues, high cholesterol and saturated fat levels associated with fish oil.

Not all Flaxseed contains Omega 3

Solin and Linola are two relatively new strains of Flaxseed that have been genetically altered to reduce dramatically or eliminate the Omega 3 content.

Caution: Milled Flaxseed is the whole seed, milled to make its nutrients biologically available to the human system.

Flax Meal: like soya bean meal, is the de-fatted portion of the seed that is a byproduct of oil production.

98% of Canada's annual flaxseed crop is used for the industrial oil (coatings) industry and Linseed oil.
