We all need and want clean clothes! Unfortunately, commercial laundry detergents, fabric softeners and dryer sheets contain alarmingly high levels of toxic chemicals well known to cause cancer, liver disorders, neurological disturbances, skin conditions and hormone disruption.  Washing our clothes in dangerous chemicals and then wearing them around all day, allows the chemical residue and artificial fragrance to penetrate our skin and enter our bloodstream where they cause serious harm. And to top it all off, all those toxic chemicals get washed downstream where they contribute to the destruction of ocean ecosystems and shrinking or polluted water tables.

Take a look at a bottle of laundry detergent, you'll find that the ingredients are rather vague.  Common laundry ingredients include but are not limited to:

bullet

Cleaning agents (anionic and nonionic surfactants)

bullet

Buffering agent

bullet

Stabilizer

bullet

Brightening agent

bullet

Fragrance

Linear alkyl sodium sulfonates (LAS): These synthetic surfactants are commonly listed as 'anionic surfactants' on labels, and are one of the most common surfactants in use. During their production process, carcinogenic and reproductive toxins such as benzene are released into the environment. They also biodegrade slowly, making them a hazard in the environment.

Petroleum distillates (aka napthas): These chemicals have been linked to cancer, lung damage, lung inflammation and damage to mucous membranes.

Phenols: According to the National Institutes of Health, phenol is toxic and people who are hypersensitive to it could experience death or serious side effects at very low exposures. Plus, it is rapidly absorbed and can cause toxicity throughout the entire body. Typically, death and severe toxicity result from phenol's effects on the central nervous system, heart, blood vessels, lungs and kidneys.               One common surfactant in U.S. laundry detergents is nonyl phenol ethoxylate (this chemical has been banned in Europe, and was found to slowly biodegrade into even more toxic compounds). Studies have found that this surfactant stimulates the growth of breast cancer cells and feminizes male fish.

Optical brighteners: These synthetic chemicals convert UV light wavelengths into visible light, which makes laundered clothes appear whiter (although does not actually affect the cleanliness of the clothing). They've been found to be toxic to fish and to cause bacterial mutations. Further, they can cause allergic reactions when exposed to skin that is later exposed to sunlight.

Phosphates: These chemicals are used to remove hard-water minerals to make detergents more effective, and to prevent dirt from settling back onto clothes during a wash. A major problem with them is that, when released into the environment, they stimulate the growth of certain marine plants, which contributes to unbalanced ecosystems. Many states have banned or restricted the use of phosphates for this reason, and you may see laundry detergents advertised as "low-phosphate" or "phosphate-free."

Sodium hypochlorite (household bleach): This is a chemical precursor to chlorine, which is highly toxic and involved in more household poisonings than any other chemical. When it reacts with organic materials in the environment, carcinogenic and toxic compounds are created than can cause reproductive, endocrine and immune system disorders.

EDTA (ethylene-diamino-tetra-acetate): EDTA is a class of compounds used as an alternative to phosphates to reduce mineral hardness in water, prevent bleaching agents from becoming active before they're put in water and as a foaming stabilizer. EDTA does not biodegrade readily and can re-dissolve toxic heavy metals in the environment, allowing them to re-enter the food chain.

what are Soapnuts?

Maggie’s PureLand Soap Nuts are the only laundry soap that grows on trees! Truly effective, 100% natural and safe for your most sensitive skin. Soap Nuts are the dried fruit of the Chinese Soapberry tree which contain saponin, a natural cleaner used for thousands of years.  Simply put a few Soap Nuts into the included cotton sack and drop it in your laundry. Your clothes come out clean, vibrant, and soft. Replace your chemical detergents and softeners with the soap made from Nature by Nature. Your clothes, your skin, your family and your planet will thank you.

Soap Nuts are the dried fruit of the Chinese Soapberry tree (Sapindus mukorrosi), similar to the lychee. When the nuts get wet, they release saponin, a natural cleaner, making them great for washing clothes, bathing or household cleaning. The Soapberry tree sends its roots back as far as the time of Buddha. The fruit of the tree, called Soap “Nuts” are a model offering from the ancient healing modalities to our modern lifestyles in the realms of cleanliness, aesthetics and medicine. Although Soap Nuts have been used in India and China for generations and in Europe for decades, it's uses are almost non-existent in the United States.

Ayurveda, the primary form of healing and framework for wellness in India, is based in a holistic approach to healing. Rooted in early Vedic culture, Ayurveda translates to "the science of life" and deals with management of healthy living. Ayurveda provides a template for wellness in the body, as it relates to physical, mental, social and spiritual harmony of a person within their environment. Maggie Dawson of PureLand Products,  inspired by the quality of life offered by following an Ayurvedic routine, brings us Maggie’s Soap Nuts, an incredible offering from this ancient Indian tradition.

Maggie’s Soap Nuts work like a detergent. They contain saponin, an all-natural surfactant. Conventional detergents are manufactured, chemical surfactants.   Surfactants work by breaking the surface tension of water so it can more easily penetrate into fabrics, effectively making water “wetter.” Once wet, the agitation of your washing machine shakes the dirt loose from your clothes. Then SoapNuts’ saponin holds the dirt in suspension in the water (preventing it from re-depositing on your clothes) until you’ve rinsed it away.  You will notice wet SoapNuts have a 'squeaky' feeling when the saponin releases naturally from the nuts. Although unscented, the saponin has a natural, mild freshness which gives your clothes body and softness with a clean natural brightness.  Saponin teams with water to penetrate deeply into your clothes, lift away grime, and rinse it away.

Use as a hair wash to increase luster and softness or as a skin soap to improve skin conditions. Your skin is the largest organ of your body and is constantly contacting your clothing and linens.  In Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, SoapNuts are used to treat hair loss, dandruff, eczema, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, acne, scabies, ringworm, athletes foot.   Used topically, Soap Nuts are used to eliminate freckles, fine lines, chemical stains and cracks in the skin. They are also used traditionally to treat mild to moderate skin complaints such as eczema and psoriasis. Soap Nuts are safe for people with sensitive skin, even people who suffer allergic reactions from store bought "sensitive skin" cleansers.

Soap Nuts are even safe enough to use as toothpaste and as a fruit and vegetable wash. A ten-minute soak in a homemade solution of Soap Nuts removes 95% of the surface pesticides and chemical residues on fresh produce. Maggie’s Soap Nuts liquid is a great concentrated cleaner. Useful in the kitchen as a food-safe cleaner for countertops, appliances, and sinks... Or use it for bathing humans and pets, fruit and vegetables, spot treating laundry, hand washing delicates, cleaning kitchens and bathrooms, washing cars and plants, repelling pests, cleaning jewelry, even sparkling windows!

No preservatives, fillers, chemicals, or artificial fragrance.

How do you use soapnuts?

Place several raw Soap Nuts into the included, reusable cotton sack. Tie it closed. Add the sack to your washing machine and follow clothing manufacturer instructions. Put the wet soapnut sack into the dryer to dry the nuts for next use and soften fabrics without dryer sheets.

Use the satchel for boiling or steeping nuts for soap "tea" liquid. Use homemade SoapNuts liquid as a great concentrated cleaner for kitchen & bath or as a healthy bathing and treatment gel.   Try the liquid as a sparkling jewelry cleaner to gently loosen debris.  Wash plants and repel pesky aphids with homemade liquid.   Recycle SoapNut shells to your garden compost!

Warm/Hot Water :  Use two soap nuts per load. The nuts release all of their saponin in about one Hot wash. SoapNuts may be re-used once with Warm water wash  You’ll know the saponin in Maggie’s Soap Nuts is used up when the nuts no longer feel squeaky clean or sudsy when you rub them.

Cold Water:
Use 4 Soap Nuts OR pre-soak 2 Soap Nuts in the cotton sack in hot
water for a few minutes. Add the “tea” and sack to your cold wash load. May be re-used 3-4 times.

Heavy Soils:

Pre-soak 4 Soap Nuts in the cotton sack in hot water
for a few minutes. Add the “tea” and sack to your wash load. Add fewer clothes to your machine so the fabric has lots of room to agitate.  Always separate your colors. For extra stain removal, add a scoop of Oxi-Clean® oxygenating formula.

Fabric Softener:
Maggie’s Soap Nuts naturally soften and add body to your clothes. You’ll love how your clothes feel after washing with Maggie’s Soap Nuts.  Put the wet, used soapnut sack into the dryer with your clothes.

Hand Washables:
Soak 2 Soap Nuts in hot water for a few minutes. Add the “tea” to your cool
water basin. Alternatively, add a squirt of your homemade Soap Nuts liquid cleaner to the cool basin.

Liquid Multi-purpose Cleaner:
Use homemade SoapNuts liquid as a great concentrated cleaner for kitchen & bath, or as a healthy Bathing gel. Keep liquid in a squeeze bottle at every sink or shower and in spray bottles for household cleaning. Keep refrigerated if you plan to store the homemade SoapNuts liquid longer than 3 weeks.

Stove top method
Simmer 1 cup Soap Nuts on the stove in 4 cups water for 10 minutes. If the mixture suds and bubbles over, fear not! When cool, simply wipe off and find your stovetop squeaky clean! After 10 minutes, turn off heat, cover, and allow Maggie’s Soap Nuts liquid to cool. When cool, mash the nuts with your hands. Strain the liquid into a bottle through a fine sieve or cheesecloth.

Soaking method
Soak 1 cup Maggie’s Soap Nuts in 4 cups water overnight. In the morning, liquefy the mixture in your blender. Strain the liquid into a bottle through a very fine sieve or cheesecloth.
